How will my child benefit from Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapists (PTs) work to help individuals to strengthen muscles, improve movement and development, as well as support those with motor-coordination difficulties related to a variety of conditions, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy and more.

PTs utilize play and creative techniques to work on strengthening, balance, and ideal positioning. Positioning is especially important for physical development, sensory processing and more.

Physical Therapy for children on the spectrum teaches them to be comfortable and competent in their bodies, giving them the added confidence to participate in a variety of gross motor activities. Additionally, PTs help children with daily routines, stabilizing posture, and enhancing gross-motor coordination while cultivating play skills.

Understandably, many people assume physical therapists only work with individuals who have issues with movement or mobility. You may be surprised to learn that children with language- or behavioral-based learning disabilities may receive a recommendation for physical therapy.

Given the structure of our brains and the close proximity of the language centers and motor cortex, neurodiverse individuals are likely to benefit across all areas of development through physical therapy.

Physical Therapists provide activities and exercises to develop motor skills to improve posture, balance, and strength so playing with others becomes easy and fun. PTs design and develop fitness programs which impact motor function and coordinations which can improve respiratory control.
